ACM Deans' professional development grants

Grants for workshops and other projects

Since 1978, the ACM academic deans have sponsored a program for professional development. The program is designed to support meetings, workshops, seminars, visiting scholar programs and other projects that deal with a subject of importance to faculty within a particular discipline or across a range of disciplines.

How to apply for a grant

The standard format is to organize a meeting with expected participation of one faculty member from each ACM college, although some variation is possible. Faculty interested in a professional development grant for 2007-08 should develop a proposal that identifies clear goals and presents a well-developed plan for accomplishing them. Proposals should give some indication that faculty at several ACM colleges have been consulted to verify their interest in the project and to help shape the meeting plans.

Ordinarily, a request for funding should not exceed $2,000, although special consideration of higher expenses can be given if there is compelling justification.

Projects are selected by the deans at their March meeting. John Ottenhoff (312/263-5000) at ACM is available to answer questions, and your academic dean can also provide information. Individuals or disciplinary or cross-disciplinary groups are encouraged to submit proposals to ACM by February 15, 2008.
