Librarians
from ACM colleges met in October 2003 as a follow-up to the ACM/ACRL
Information Literacy Immersion Program in July 2003.
ACM
librarians used to meet regularly but curtailed the practice in
the mid 1980s. Through conversations during the planning phase for
the ACM/ACRL Information Literacy Immersion Program, agreement emerged
that since there had been such significant changes in the information
sciences and the role of libraries at residential liberal arts colleges,
a renewal of this practice might be in order. Jean Donham (College
Librarian, Cornell) coordinated the meeting with assistance from
the ACM Chicago office.
The
22 participants at the meeting held concurrent sessions on topics
of interest, including:
-
Staffing Model for Libraries (facilitated by Ms. Donham and Greg
Cotton, Cornell)
-
Academic Honesty/Ethics of Information (Dave Collins, Macalester)
-
Curriculum Mapping/Assessment (Mary Iber and Michelle Holschuh
Simmons, Cornell)
-
Collaborating with Academic Support Services (Rick Sayre, Monmouth)
The meeting concluded with a session on future directions with Jeff
Douglas (Director of the Library, Knox) as chair, including an extended
discussion of the different roles and purposes of libraries.
The
librarians also expressed interest in pursuing a relationship with
the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and asked the ACM office
to investigate this.
Fall
2004 meeting
Jim Cubit (Director of the Library, Lake Forest) coordinated a meeting
of librarians on November 5, 2004 at Lake Forest College.
