General framework of the program

The program is designed for students with an interest in Africa-related fields in either the social sciences or humanities. Course offerings include direct enrollment in intensive Setswana language, one elective course in African Studies taught at the University of Botswana, a required African Studies course taught by the ACM faculty director, and a supervised independent study project. This program, previously operated in Tanzania and Zimbabwe, transferred to Botswana in 2008.

More information about the program

Specific duties of the Director

The Director's duties include both teaching and general administrative oversight. He or she will organize an orientation to Botswana in collaboration with University of Botswana staff, and may organize and coordinate special lectures providing historical and cultural background. The Director will teach a course in their field required for all ACM students and will coordinate and grade independent study projects. The Director will oversee a program of field trips during scheduled semester breaks, including a trip to the Okavango Delta. The Director is expected to supervise student life issues, including student health and well-being, and work closely with Botswana colleagues to support student achievement in the program.

In addition, the Director will provide the ACM office with regular monthly reports, oversee the program finances, promote the program on ACM campuses, and provide the perspective of the ACM colleges on curricular issues. The program runs from early January through mid-May. During the year preceding the assignment, the Director will confer regularly with the ACM office to ensure that planning is going smoothly for the upcoming program. The Director is also expected to conduct a program site visit to Botswana in the spring of 2009. The appointee will also be expected to visit college campuses during the preceding academic year to discuss the program with students and faculty.

Application criteria

Any ACM faculty member is eligible to apply, though those with experience in southern Africa or in a discipline related to African Studies are particularly welcome. It is also helpful to have some experience with off-campus study since the Director has to serve in the role of dean of students and help students become comfortable with their surroundings.

Compensation

The ACM Director will receive his or her regular salary and fringe benefits, a subsidy for housing, and round-trip airfare between the home campus and Gaborone, Botswana. Travel will be provided for a spouse and up to two children under 18. In Gaborone, visiting faculty will have the option of placing their children in public or private schools.

Application procedures

For further information about the program, consult your campus program advisor. Interested faculty should contact Kristine Jones or Meghan Beltmann at the ACM office. Applications should include:

  • A letter describing the applicant's background and interest in the program, outlining goals related to teaching, working with students and undertaking personal projects in Botswana.
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A letter from the chief academic officer endorsing the application.
  • The names, addresses and telephone numbers of three other individuals familiar with the applicant's interests and work.

Selection will be made in consultation with the Executive Committee of the Culture and Society in Africa Program. The application deadline is as soon as possible.

The letter of application should be sent to:
