Specific
duties of the Director
The Director's duties include both teaching and general administrative
oversight. He or she will coordinate and grade the research projects,
organize an orientation to Tanzania, and support student engagement
with their project supervisors. The Director will consult with Tanzanian
faculty at the University of Dar es Salaam teaching the Kiswahili,
Human Evolution, and Ecology courses, and coordinate films or special
lectures providing historical and cultural background. The Director
will supervise student life issues, monitor student health and well-being,
and work closely with Tanzanian colleagues to support student achievement
in the program. The Director will supervise students and program
all operations during six weeks dedicated to field work.
In addition, the Director will provide the ACM office with regular
reports, oversee the program finances, promote the program on ACM
campuses, and provide the perspective of the ACM colleges on curricular
issues. The program runs from late July through early December.
During the year preceding the assignment, the Director will confer
regularly with the ACM office to ensure that planning is going smoothly
for the upcoming program. The appointee will also be expected to
visit college campuses during the preceding academic year to discuss
the program with students and faculty.

|
Application
criteria
Any
ACM faculty member is eligible to apply, with preference given to
those with disciplinary background in Ecology or Human Evolution
and experience in East Africa. It is also helpful to have some experience
with off-campus study. The program will be physically and academically
demanding for students, and the Director should be prepared to handle
the same challenges while helping students take advantage of the
particular resources of Tanzania.
|
|
Compensation
The
ACM Director will receive his or her regular salary and fringe benefits,
a subsidy for UDSM housing in Dar es Salaam, and round-trip airfare
between the home campus and Dar es Salaam. Travel will be provided
for a spouse and up to two children under 18. In Dar es Salaam,
visiting faculty will accompany the students to the field.
