Faculty travel grants

Costa Rica

The ACM Latin American Programs (Studies in Latin American Culture & Society and Tropical Field Research) offer two grants a year to visit the program site in Costa Rica.

The grants allow faculty to become more familiar with ACM's fall and spring programs, to make professional contacts, and to explore research possibilities in the natural and social sciences and in language, literature and the arts. Tropical biology, ecology and geology offer a particularly wide range of potential research projects, and faculty can also do research in anthropology, archaeology, economics, political science, sociology and history.

The grants typically cover short-term trips of one to three weeks, and ACM pays economy round-trip airfare between the recipient's campus and San Jose, Costa Rica. In San Jose, the program staff will help faculty visitors find lodging and provide local information, but all local expenses are the visitor's responsibility.

Although exceptions are occasionally made, priority goes to applicants who fulfill the following criteria:

  • The applicant has never been to Costa Rica.
  • The applicant is willing to discuss the ACM programs with interested students once he or she returns to campus.
  • The applicant actively observes or participates in the ACM program while in Costa Rica.
  • The applicant currently has a research project that would be enriched by a visit to Costa Rica or is planning to undertake such a project.
  • No other person from the applicant's campus has been awarded an ACM Costa Rica travel grant that year.

Interested faculty should send the following:

  • A letter of application;
  • An outline of the proposed purpose of the trip and its relationship to ongoing professional interests;
  • A current curriculum vitae; and
  • A letter of recommendation from the dean.

The deadline for applying for a grant for 2008-09 is April 15, 2008. Grant recipients are asked to provide ACM with a full report within a month of their return.

Interested faculty are encouraged to discuss their plans with Kristine Jones at ACM. Applications and inquiries should be sent to:
