Excellent research on an off-campus program doesn’t have to follow a particular model, but it does require intentionality – about design, cultural sensitivity, and support. With those elements in place and reinforcing each other, conducting an independent research project off-campus can be an experience that resonates long after the program has concluded.

  • Students visiting Morningstar

    Students in the Chicago Program's entrepreneurship seminar visit Morningstar.

    Call for proposals and participants: Japan Study’s conference on The Future of East Asian Studies at Liberal Arts Colleges will be held on October 5-7 at Earlham College. Faculty from ACM colleges will receive a subsidy for travel and lodging.
  • Funding up to $750 is available to help ACM faculty or administrative leaders caucus at a professional conference, on a campus, or at the ACM office in Chicago. For more information or to apply, contact Betsy Hutula at ACM.

On the Off-Campus Study Programs

    Nidal Kram found that science and culture go hand-in-hand when she studied parasitic diseases on the Tanzania Program. The experience, she said, “literally put me in a place where I could see and feel what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” Read about it
  • What happens when “Old World” meets “New World”? Colorado College professors William Davis and Eric Perramond will lead students in exploring that question in the fall 2013 Newberry Seminar. Read about it
  • Faculty from Beloit, Colorado, and St. Olaf toured neighborhoods, visited a business incubator, and met with community activists during a spring site visit to the Chicago Program. Read about it
  • Childhood obesity, scarlet macaws, and politics in colonial Boston were topics of independent research projects by three students which were cited for excellence in this year’s Award for Outstanding Research on an ACM Program. Read about it
  • Ask a question, start to answer. Scott Heerman took that advice to heart in the Newberry Seminar and has continued to follow it in a seven-year intellectual adventure. Read about it
