What’s a Picture Worth? $350 in the ACM Photo Contest

What’s a Picture Worth? $350 in the ACM Photo Contest February 23, 2016

Is a picture worth a thousand words? Maybe. But it’s certain that one picture will be worth $350 for the winner of this year’s ACM Off-Campus Study Photo Contest.

Winning photos from the ACM Off-Campus Study Photo Contest the past two years:

A Learning Moment” by Mark Muniz, Knox College (top) and “Girls in the Shambaas” by Abby Guthmann, Lawrence University.

The contest is open to students who participated in ACM study away programs in 2015 and the deadline for entries is rapidly approaching on Friday, February 26.

This is the chance for off-campus veterans to share their experiences, as portrayed in photos they took while studying on ACM programs in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and the U.S.

All the photos entered in the contest will be posted on the ACM Facebook page during the week of February 29 to March 7, and the photo receiving the most “likes” will win the Facebook Fans’ Choice prize and a check for $100.

A panel of judges will select four of the photos to receive cash prizes, ranging from $350 for first place to $100 for fourth place.

The judges will be looking for images that go beyond a typical tourist shot to show cross-cultural learning, students actively engaging with the local culture, and the interdisciplinary nature of liberal arts education. Creativity, artistry, and composition will also be factors in selecting the top photos.

Each student may submit up to three photos to the contest. Details and instructions for submitting photos are on the 2015-16 ACM Photo Contest webpage.
