Exploring the Issues of Asylum and Migration in a European Context
In my study abroad experience in Denmark, I enrolled in the academic program "Migration and Identity." In this program, we explored the issues of multiculturalism, national identity, migration, and asylum in a European context.
The program consisted of study trips within Denmark and Europe as well as visits to government agencies and NGO offices. I met individuals who were directly involved in issues of asylum and migration, either through their employment or through their experiences. I had the opportunity to work with the asylum-seekers, which was featured in an issue of the Danish magazine, New Times, a magazine about asylum-seekers and refugees. Throughout the semester, I volunteered at a center for immigrants and refugees.

All of these experiences allowed me to understand how issues of migration and asylum work on a global scale. The experiences and interactions brought me a more humane and comprehensive understanding of people. It enriched my awareness on topics that are highly politicized, yet many times fail to take individual experiences into account. Due to this experience, I redefined my topic for my senior Honors project, and started seeking employment and internship opportunities on issues of asylum.
