Beyond the Clay

In my travels to both Japan and Nicaragua I was expecting to gain some exposure to different art styles and see some places I had never been before. In retrospect, these expectations seem rather shallow because what I really gained from these trips gave me a new lens through which to view my artwork and every ethical aspect of my life.

Both Japan and Nicaragua gave me new insights into how art is made, its impact and its uses. Japan caused me to question my philosophies on art on a much deeper level than I had ever imagined and Nicaragua showed me how pottery can be completely functional and serve as a way of life.

In my presentation I would like to share more specifically what kinds of lessons I learned and what impacts they had on my life and artwork.
