Symposium Schedule
To the Students, Faculty and Staff in the ACM Community:
I am delighted to welcome you to the ACM’s 50th Anniversary Student Symposium on Off-Campus Study.
The Symposium provides an opportunity for students from all the member campuses to share their reflections that grow from field research or experiential education on off-campus programs, both in the U.S. and abroad. Students from a wide range of academic disciplines have spent many hours of thought in preparation and will present the insights and analyses they’ve brought back to the ACM campuses from their studies away.
This event is the culmination of a series of commemorations during this academic year. These events mark half a century of collaboration among the ACM member colleges. Other events included an all-ACM Soccer Classic, a Photography Contest for Off-Campus Study Students, and a reception at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).
I look forward to the presentations and to seeing you in the audience.

Dinner Reception
5:30-7 p.m.
Lake Forest President Steven Schutt will welcome the student participants and guests at a reception in downtown Chicago. Former ACM President Elizabeth Hayford will speak about the programs created during her years with the consortium. Jody Kretzmann, a founding faculty member of the ACM Urban Studies Program, will talk about the ways that experiential education distinguishes off-campus study.
Guest Speakers:
Stephen Schutt, President of Lake Forest College
Stephen Schutt, President of Lake Forest College since 2001, is a strong believer in ACM’s collaborative programs for study abroad, faculty and staff development, resource and data sharing, and promotion of the liberal arts, which have expanded the realm of the possible for each member college. President Schutt was Chair of ACM’s Board of Directors in 2007-08 when ACM’s new strategic plan was developed and approved, and when current efforts to assess the outcomes of study abroad and other programs were begun. Before coming to Lake Forest, he served as Vice President & Chief of Staff at the University of Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth Hayford, President Emerita of ACM
Elizabeth Hayford, who served as President of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest for 22 years, has been a leader in developing models for collaboration, both among ACM colleges and with other consortia, academic institutions, and foundations. During her presidency, ACM established innovative off-campus study programs in Africa (Zimbabwe and Tanzania), Central and Eastern Europe (Czech Republic and Russia), and the U.S. (Chicago Arts). ACM’s international programs have been particularly notable for the strong ties that Dr. Hayford and many others in the ACM community have fostered with academic institutions in the host countries.
Jody Kretzmann, Co-Director of The Asset-Based Community Development Institute, Northwestern University
A much-traveled speaker and trainer, Jody Kretzmann brings more than thirty years of community experience and study to his current position at Northwestern. He was a founding faculty member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Urban Studies Program in 1969, and served as director of the program for six years. He has been a community organizer in Chicago’s West Side, and served as a consultant to a wide range of neighborhood organizing and development groups. In addition to the ACM Program, he has taught at Northwestern University, Valparaiso University and the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.
