What better place to teach a course on drama than in London, surrounded by the resources of the city’s brilliant theatre scene? Or teaching field research methods in Tanzania, with the Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge close at hand? Or perhaps helping students engage with Middle Eastern culture in the cosmopolitan city of Amman, Jordan?
For faculty at ACM colleges, these scenarios – as well as others – are possible through Visiting Faculty positions on semester-length ACM off-campus study programs in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the U.S.

The Call for Applications this year is unusual in that it covers positions in two academic years – 2015-16 and 2016-17. The reason is to shift the timing of ACM’s application and selection process, according to Joan Gillespie, Vice President and Director of Off-Campus Study.
“Typically, ACM has made appointments about 16 to 20 months in advance, and we’ve found that increasingly departments on our campuses are planning their teaching schedules further in advance than that,” Gillespie said. “Our goal is to add a year to the lead time to facilitate on-campus planning and to give our visiting faculty – as well as ACM staff – more time to prepare for the term off-campus.”
“To put the new application and selection schedule in place, we’ve doubled up the call for applications this year and are seeking two sets of visiting faculty,” she noted.
The exact responsibilities of visiting positions with ACM vary, but may include teaching a course in the faculty’s area of expertise, guiding students on independent research or practicum projects, serving as a liaison with partners at local universities, or leading student orientation, advising, and field trips.
The interdisciplinary positions are open to applicants from across the disciplines. For example, faculty serving on ACM programs this year represent biology, comparative literature, environmental science, theatre, English, sociology, religion, and political science.
The program locations offer professional development opportunities for faculty to make professional contacts, incorporate local resources into their teaching, and participate in ACM’s annual conference for off-campus program directors.

- Florence: Arts, Humanities, & Culture – Affiliated Scholars for Fall 2015 and Fall 2016
- Florence: Arts in Context – Affiliated Scholars for Spring 2016 and Spring 2017
- Jordan: Middle East & Arabic Language Studies – Visiting Faculty for Fall 2015 and Fall 2016
- London: Arts in Context – Visiting Faculty/Directors for Spring 2016 and Spring 2017
- Newberry Seminar: Research in the Humanities – Faculty Co-Directors for Fall 2015 and Fall 2016
- Tanzania: Ecology & Human Origins – Visiting Faculty/Program Directors for Fall 2015 and Fall 2016
The deadline for applications is February 17, 2014, except for the Botswana Program, which has a deadline of April 21, 2014.
