The Newberry's collections

American West

Through donations and purchases, the Newberry Library has built a substantial collection of materials about the American West. It includes the records of explorers, accounts of cowboys, and reports on Native American life and practice. The material is part of the Library's large collection on American history and literature.

Right: William Clark's account book (1825-1828). This journal's primary importance is the record inscribed on the front cover headed "Men on Lewis and Clark's Trip," which shows what had happened to the members of the pioneering expedition of 1804-1806.
