Hometown: I don't know how most people define "hometown"; I always struggle to answer the question "Where are you from?" I was born in Boston, but moved to Indonesia when I was two years old and grew up there, staying until I graduated from high school. I go to college in Ohio at Oberlin College and my parents live in Virginia. For most of my life, Jakarta was my "hometown", but I guess it is no longer.
Major/minor: I am an English major, in which I hope to concentrate in book history, and hope to be an Environmental Studies minor.
Campus activities, involvement, or other interests: Last semester, I started writing for the Oberlin Review, the college's main newspaper, and editing for the environmental magazine, Headwaters. I am also part of the Oberlin Dressage Team (horse riding).
Why I chose to do this program: This program was the only one I could find in a Spanish-speaking country that offered a literature course which did not require direct matriculation. With four semesters of Spanish under my belt, I didn't feel ready to take on a literature course designed for native speakers who grew up analyzing Latin literature.
What I'm most excited about: I am most excited about living in a country whose main language is not English again, and having the opportunity to become a part of a culture other than the one I am most accustomed to. I am also really excited about using my Spanish and connecting with people in a language other than English and becoming fluent, or as close to fluent as possible, in another language.
