Hometown: Beloit, WI

Major & minor: Health and Society major with a focus in Economics and Development, Political Science minor

Campus activities, involvement, or other interests: I am a member of Peace and Justice Club and the Beloit Student Dining Cooperative.  I tutor a community member through the Stateline Literacy Council, helping her with English and communication skills.  I'm an outside hitter and play back row for the Beloit College volleyball team, and I'm currently working as a research assistant for the Political Science department on a project related to employment, education, and empowerment.

Why I chose this program: I chose this program because it seemed like the right balance between directly enrolling at a university and going on an "island" program.  The independent study project appeared to be a great way to put into practice the things I've been discussing in class, and Botswana's economic, political, cultural, and health environment interests me greatly.

What I'm most excited about: I'm looking forward to understanding how some of the cultural norms contribute to Botswana's staggering HIV/AIDS rate, and I can't wait to meet new people.  I'm also really excited to explore unfamiliar territory and be in an environment so different from what I'm used to.
