Kathleen Murphy-Geiss

  • Grinnell College
  • Tanzania, Fall 2009

Hometown: Denver, Colorado

Majors: Anthropology and Music double major

Campus activities and interests: Grinnell Singers, theater and music, Ultimate Frisbee (Grinnell Sticky Tongue Frogs), backpacking and hiking and anything outdoors-y, working at Girl Scout camp

Why I chose the ACM Tanzania program: It caters to my particular interests in Anthropology, including Cultural Anthropology and Human Evolution, as well as to my taste for adventure. When I'm not at school, I spend my summers hiking and backpacking in the Rocky Mountains, and I was looking for a program that would satisfy me academically as well as something that would give me a great adventure.

What I'm most excited about: I think I'm most excited about the drastic difference in culture I'll get to experience. I'm really eager to learn about and experience the culture and traditions in Tanzania, both with in the more modernized Dar es Salaam, as well as the more indigenous cultures out in Tarangire. I think it's going to be a fascinating learning experience for the entire four months!
