Why I chose to do the Mexico summer program: I needed to take a class this summer and knew that without a doubt a study abroad program is the best way to learn a language. I chose the program to Mexico because of the many ties between Mexico and the U.S. It has been very interesting to hear the perspective of Mexicans on the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico. It has given me more compassion and understanding that there is no easy solution for the strained relations.
What I'm most excited about: I am so excited about the wonderful friends that I have met in Mexico. I sincerely hope to return, perhaps for a more extensive period time. Also, I have learned an exceptional amount of Spanish and love that I can hold serious conversations in a foreign language.
Anything else? Mexico City is safer and cleaner that I thought it would be. Of course, there are unsafe areas and security measures to take. But this is like any other big city. So, I would encourage anyone with uncertainties to push aside the misleading media. The people are wonderful; the Mexican boys I have been hanging out with are very fun and respectful of women.
