The Beloit College Florence Program

  • Florence, Fall 2010

Hometown: Charlevoix, MI (a very small town up between the pinky and the ring finger, right on Lake Michigan)

Major & minor: Communication major and Art History minor...  I want to work in an art museum one day!

Activities & interests: I participate in Hope's Dance Marathon fundraiser and a Bible study on campus. I love to sing, and I have taken several voice classes at Hope. I love to read, meet people, and make things with my hands. That's about it.

Why I chose to do this program: Well, for starters, I am Italian (well, Sicilian, really) so I want to be able to experience the culture and the lifestyle that I have had tastes of throughout my childhood. Also, if you are doing anything related to art history, where better to study than Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance? And then there's the specifics of the program that are so wonderful: living with an Italian family; the limited number of students participating, making it a much more personal and intimate program than most; and finally, the arts/humanities focus is such a great thing to focus on when in Italy, where art and relationships and culture are so rich and abundant. It seems like a wonderful program and I can't wait to get to Italy and get started!!

What I'm most excited about: The food. The art. The people. Everything really.

Ian Darlington From the professors to the food, everything about this program was excellent. The professors know the city and culture well, having lived there for many years. In addition to being extremely helpful and organized, they adjust expectations per individual based on previous academic exposure to certain topics and by giving students ample opportunities to both learn in class and explore the city/country on their own. Staying with a host family may seem a little intimidating, but after meeting them and getting settled in, they were a fantastic resource for both culture and language; I am still in contact with mine. Anyone who loves art, wants to learn Italian, or longs to live in Italy, this is the program for you!
