Activities & interests: I have a long-standing interest in social justice and aspire to catalyze social change through education, health, and human rights activism. This past semester I have focused primarily on two areas: Haiti relief efforts and the Killer Coke Campaign. In response to the January 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti I formed a student group that organized various fundraising and awareness events. Our efforts were aimed at monetarily assisting reputable feeding, education and medical programs, while emphasizing that a successful rebuilding process will take a prolonged and dedicated commitment. The Killer Coke Campaign asks for a similar commitment from students as we unite to stand in solidarity with those negatively affected by the Coca-Cola Company's human rights and labor abuses, water exploitation and pollution.

Why I chose to do this program: I have always been fascinated by the influence of perceptions of class and social mobility on disparities between populations. Two examples that struck me most heavily, issues related HIV/AIDS and to Coca-Cola’s practices, are particularly pertinent to India. Though largely ignored, Coca-Cola’s various exploitive practices have been met with fierce resistance by two of the most heavily affected Indian groups: dalits and farmers who cannot get water to irrigate their crops. A similar story plays out in the HIV/AIDS community. The wealthy can afford lifesaving antiretroviral medications, while the poor are condemned to a swift and painful death. Access to clean water and healthcare are not privileges. They are basic human rights. I realize, however, that any effort to stand in solidarity and work for change must be coupled with a deep understanding of local perspectives and beliefs. The ACM Program in Pune offers unlimited opportunities to get involved and become immersed in Indian life. I look forward to the insight these experiences will provide, and the learning and personal growth that are sure to come from them!

What I'm most excited about: Studying in India will open my eyes to a world I could not possibly have imagined without the framework of experience. I am excited to meet the wonderful students and faculty that will most certainly have a huge impact on the course of my journey, and look forward forming lifelong friendships and invaluable connections! All, of course, while surrounded by the captivating beauty of India.
