Hometown: Oconomowoc, WI

Major/minor: Biology major, Hispanic Studies minor, Community & Global Health concentration

Campus activities, involvement, or other interests: I co-lead a weekly volunteer group to the Jeremiah Program, a non-profit organization that supports single women and their children.  I also play violin and am a member of the Macalester Symphony Orchestra and played in the orchestra pit for the musical Cabaret this semester.

Why I chose this program: I chose the ACM Costa Rica Field Research program because I have always wanted to go to Costa Rica and I think the semester will give me the perfect opportunity to blend my Hispanic Studies minor, my Biology major, and my interest in medicine and public health.  I haven't had the opportunity to do an independent research project yet in my career at Macalester, so I think the program will give me a chance to develop some important new skills.

What I'm most excited about: Everything!  I'm excited about living with a host family, improving my Spanish, experiencing a new culture, traveling, working with children (hopefully my research will center around health care for children), and formulating/carrying out my own research project.

Anything else?  As of now, I hope to become a pediatric cardiologist, so I would like to focus my research in Costa Rica around children's health in rural areas.
