Testimonial: Bethany Garling, Valparaiso University

Bethany Garling

The ACM Chicago Program was a deeply transformative experience for me. The Chicago Program staff is intelligent, highly experienced, creative and dedicated, and they consistently go above and beyond to serve as teachers, mentors, and guides. I participated in the social justice track, where I was introduced to a variety of people and perspectives that challenged and deepened my understanding of Chicago, and complimented my previous work as a social work major. During the semester I was also able to complete an internship at Lawyer’s Committee for Better Housing where I was allowed to work hands on with individuals going through the eviction process, and even to support clients in court. This internship gave me a level of professional confidence and competence that many of my peers have yet to have the opportunity to develop. Overall, the Chicago Program encouraged me to consider the city as a collection of voices and experiences, and gave me the confidence and insight to begin to understand what my story can mean within this larger context.
