Presentation Grants
The following Presentation Grants totalling $10,972 were awarded in August 2011.
Finding Our Way: Strategies for Internationalizing Undergraduate Psychology
- Kenneth Abrams, psychology, Carleton College
- Grant amount: Up to $3,000
- Dana Gross, psychology, St. Olaf College
- Grant amount: Up to $2,190
In December 2009, Ken Abrams and Dana Gross received a FaCE grant to bring together psychology faculty from across the ACM to network, share ideas, and develop strategies for internationalizing psychology curricula, both through study abroad and conventional classroom experiences. They held a two-day workshop on June 3-4, 2011 at St. Olaf College and Carleton College.
Dana will present at the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development in July 2012 in Edmonton, Canada. The ISSBD is "the largest international organization of researchers studying human development across the lifespan." Dana's presentation will focus on elements of the workshop that explicitly addressed aspects of human development across cultures, such as activites and SERC resources supporting the use of film to internationalize courses in development psychology. She will also provide information about the international off-campus course in India that she has developed for St. Olaf students.
Ken will present at the International Association for Cross Cultural Psychology in July 2012 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The IACCP aims to "facilitate communication and cooperation among cross-cultuel psychologists and to promote psychological research from a cross-cultural perspectives." Ken's presentation will evaluate ideas presented at the FaCE workshop by keynote speaker Ethan Watters, such as how American "exports" of psychotherapy and psychtropic medications to non-Western cultures often clash with local conceptions and customs surrounding health and illness.
Capturing Institutional Perspectives to Assess Study Abroad
- Beloit College: Betsy Brewer and Russell Cannon, Office of International Education
- Grant Amount: Up to $3,000
- Carleton College: Helena Kaufman and Andrea Nixon, Office of Study Abroad
- Grant amount: Up to $2,782
In November 2009, Betsy Brewer and Helena Kaufman organized the FaCE-supported conference "Integrating Study Abroad into the Undergraduate Curriculum." The goals of this conference were 1) to bring attention to how study abroad can be integrated into the undergraduate curriculum, and 2) to investigate how this integration is affecting the work of the faculty in their teaching, advising, and scholarship.
Betsy and Helena, along with colleagues from their institutions, will lead a roundtable discussion on "Capturing Institutional Perspectives to Assess Study Abroad" at the Forum on Education Abroad in March 2012 in Denver, CO. The Forum on Education Abroad has recently emerged as the leading organization devoted to understanding and improving education abroad. The theme of this conference will be "Tracing the Experience: From Inquiry to Intergration, " a theme that resonates strongly with the theme of the 2009 FaCE project on study abroad integration, as well as with subsequent assessment work being undertaken at Beloit College, Carleton College, and within the ACM.
