Intentional Integration of Academic and Athletic Programs
This conference will gather faculty, senior athletic staff, and academic and student life leaders to identify strategies that ACM colleges and the consortium can adopt to:
- Strengthen ties and understanding between faculty and coaches;
- Find and strengthen the areas of student learning where overlap occurs in both the classroom and through participation in sports; and
- Create new and innovative ways to increase the overlap between academics and athletics both in and out of the classroom, in support of the liberal arts mission.
The conference will build on the preliminary discussions of this topic that were conducted on ACM campuses during spring and summer 2009.
Robert Malekoff will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Dr. Malekoff is Assistant Professor of Sport Studies at Guilford College and senior advisor to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s College Sports Project. He has also served as the facilitator for the Integration Institutes sponsored by the College Sports Project, and as director of athletics at the College of Wooster and at Connecticut College, associate director of athletics at Harvard University, and as lacrosse and soccer coach at Princeton University. He will also produce a White Paper, synthesizing the reports about ACM preliminary campus conversations.
As a FaCE collaborative conference, “Intentional Integration of Academic and Athletic Programs” seeks to create sustainable partnerships and meaningful results. Participants will be engaged in building resources for wider sharing of the conference discussions with their colleagues and the larger higher-education community.
