Grants Awarded: Winter Quarter 2009

The ACM is pleased to announce that Stephen Fineberg, Szold Distinguished Service Professor of Classics at Knox College, and Saadi Simawe, Associate Professor of English at Grinnell College, have received the first awards in the new ACM-University of Chicago Faculty Development Grant program.

Fineberg's grant will assist him in the beginning stages of a study of the Greek myth of Theseus and Ariadne, for which the corpus of Attic Greek vases will provide a significant portion of the evidence. The University's Regenstein Library's holdings in this area will be especially helpful to Fineberg. Simawe's book project, "Archetypes of Power: A Comparative Study of Images of Blackness in Arabic and American Literatures and Cultures," will draw upon Regenstein's impressive Arabic collections and builds on work he began in a 2000 NEH summer seminar with University of Chicago professor Fred Donner.
