Faculty Travel Grants

Travel grants are available to faculty from ACM colleges for travel to:

Costa Rica

The ACM Latin American Programs (Latin American Culture & Society and Field Research) offer two grants a year to visit the program site in Costa Rica.

The grants allow faculty to become more familiar with ACM's fall and spring programs, to make professional contacts, and to explore research possibilities in the natural and social sciences and in language, literature and the arts. Tropical biology, ecology and geology offer a particularly wide range of potential research projects, and faculty can also do research in anthropology, archaeology, economics, political science, sociology and history.

The grants typically cover short-term trips of one to three weeks, and ACM pays economy round-trip airfare between the recipient's campus and San Jose, Costa Rica. In San Jose, the program staff will help faculty visitors find lodging and provide local information, but all local expenses are the visitor's responsibility.

Although exceptions are occasionally made, priority goes to applicants who fulfill the following criteria:

  • The applicant has never been to Costa Rica.
  • The applicant is willing to discuss the ACM programs with interested students once he or she returns to campus.
  • The applicant actively observes or participates in the ACM program while in Costa Rica.
  • The applicant currently has a research project that would be enriched by a visit to Costa Rica or is planning to undertake such a project.
  • No other person from the applicant's campus has been awarded an ACM Costa Rica travel grant that year.

For more information, contact Costa Rica Program Associate Heather Everst (312/263-5000) at ACM.

Newberry Library in Chicago, IL

The Newberry Library in Chicago is a rich resource for scholars in the humanities. To help faculty members at ACM and GLCA colleges take advantage of this resource, the ACM offers modest travel grants.

Faculty at ACM and GLCA colleges are welcome to make short visits to get acquainted with the Newberry's collection. Such a visit would be particularly useful for those interested in directing the Newberry Seminar in the Humanities, or who want to investigate research possibilities at the library.

To make these visits possible, ACM offers grants that cover two nights lodging at a moderately priced hotel in downtown Chicago. Applications consist of a vita and a proposal that outlines the applicant's goals for the research and its suitability to the Newberry's collection. A limited number of grants are available; applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

The Newberry is one of the country's foremost research centers in the humanities. Its collections focus on the history and literature of Europe and the Americas from the medieval period to the early twentieth century. Specific strengths of the European collections include the Renaissance, the French Revolutionary era, Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian history, and British literature and history. Strong collections for Americanists cover the American West, European exploration and settlement of the New World, local history and genealogy, Native American history and literature, and the literature and history of the Midwest. The Newberry also has world-renowned collections in the history of cartography, the history and theory of music, the history of printing, and early philology and linguistics. The Library is a thriving community of scholars where you can meet colleagues from around the world.

For more information contact ACM Vice President John Ottenhoff or Newberry Program Associate Emily Gaul (312/263-5000).
