Botswana: University Immersion in Southern Africa

Gaborone, Botswana

Living arrangements

Students live in University of Botswana undergraduate student dormitories, typically in double occupancy rooms.  Students may be roommates with another ACM student, an international student, or a Batswana (as the people of Botswana are called) student.  The dormitories have basic amenities, and the room layout tends to offer more privacy than traditional U.S. dorms.  Bathroom facilities are shared, with typically one bathroom per floor.  Living in the University dormitories promotes close interaction with Batswana students and leads to a significant degree of inter-cultural competence.

There are no cooking facilities in the dormitories, and students are expected to purchase their own meals.  There are several dining options on campus, and many additional restaurants within walking distance.

Melissa Eisenberg The ACM Botswana program was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, but it was also one of the most enriching experiences I have ever encountered. I was faced with a new challenge every day, but every day I was also able to learn something new and create so many memories I will never forget. I am forever changed because of my semester spent in Botswana. I am so much more aware that there are so many people that live differently than me and yet, I am still able to make lasting connections. I will cherish the time spent abroad for the rest of my life.
