There’s just something inspiring about Chicago. You’ll see it in the city’s mighty skyline rising out of Lake Michigan, hear it every time the "El" train rumbles overhead on its steel trellis, taste it in the famous falafel sandwich at Wicker Park’s Sultan’s Market, and even smell it in the fern room of the Garfield Park Conservatory. Chicago may be the best urban environment in America today for young artists to discover themselves, their careers, and their artistic voices. It is the home of world renowned arts organizations like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Steppenwolf Theatre, and the Art Institute of Chicago. It is the birthplace of gospel music, improv acting, and slam poetry. Chicago has provided inspiration to artists as varied as Frank Lloyd Wright, Muddy Waters, Tina Fey, David Mamet, Ed Paschke, Sandra Cisneros, Wilco, Ira Glass, Bill Murray, Audrey Niffenegger, and Kanye West. Will it inspire you?
The ACM Chicago Arts program introduces students who are interested in a broad range of the arts – music, theater, dance, film, fine arts, creative writing, and related liberal arts – to the creative process as it is expressed within the context of a major urban arena and by the individual students themselves. In addition, students are asked to consider and apply their examination of the creative process within the broader context of their experience living and working in the major urban center of Chicago. Each fall and spring semester, students participating in the program will participate in four key academic components. The Chicago Core Course is an interdisciplinary course examining the city of Chicago by exploring how arts, business, and socio-political issues intertwine. The Seminar course focuses on the artistic and creative process, examining the conditions under which art is produced in Chicago, and including opportunities to engage in artistic experiences and meet artists around the city. The Internship is a chance to gain hands-on experience, as students work with a local organization to expand and refine their artistic visions and aspirations in the context of the city’s art forces. The Arts Workshop is where students develop an independent study project (ISP), drawing on Chicago’s resources to create an original project related to artistic creativity. Note: Students participating in the spring trimester option will take the core course, program seminar, and will have a choice between an internship or an independent study project.
Students live with other Chicago Programs participants in furnished, shared apartments in various neighborhoods throughout the city of Chicago. Classes are held at the ACM Chicago Programs office on State Street, in the heart of downtown Chicago. Students will also spend a great deal of class time outside the traditional classroom, exploring the city, attending arts-related events, and interacting with a wide variety of artists. Through their experiences living, working, and learning in Chicago, students will develop contacts with Chicago-based artists, learn to recognize and express creativity in everyday life, and deepen their knowledge of the city from a variety of perspectives in order to better understand the interconnections among the arts, business, and society within Chicago's vibrant urban milieu.
