Tour of the ACM Chicago Programs office

Chicago.  The third-largest city in the United States is a thriving urban center that’s as important as ever on both the national and global landscape.  It’s an international business hub with a remarkable array of start-up companies and non-profits, medical centers, and educational institutions. It pulses with a vibrant arts scene, home to world-renowned museums, blues and jazz clubs, poetry slams, and theatre companies.  And its people represent remarkable diversity, creating a mosaic of cultures and ethnicities, and bringing with them a deep history of urban reform and social engagement.  There’s no better place than "The Windy City" for students to spend a semester living, learning, and exploring.

The Chicago Programs office is located in the heart of downtown Chicago's "Loop" district, along historic State Street.  Housed directly adjacent to the famed Chicago Theatre, it's the perfect stepping-off point for exploring the city.  With multiple bus lines and “El” trains just steps outside the front door of the office, Chicago's sprawling variety of neighborhoods are just a short ride away.  Shops, restaurants, parks, businesses, and cultural venues abound, giving students easy access to all the best that Chicago has  to offer.  Students spend a good amount of time at the Chicago Programs site, taking classes in one of the several classrooms, using the resource library and computer workstations, and meeting with faculty and classmates.  However, a great deal of the program takes place outside the office, visiting organizations and locations in a variety of neighborhoods, using the vast resources of the city as a "real-world" classroom.

Alison Meinert When starting this program, I was looking for a change – to get off campus and experience a more diverse city. I was also really looking forward to hands-on experience. With my semester in the Chicago Urban Studies program, what I got was so much more. Chicago is definitely diverse and I love the city life. The field trips we took and speakers we had were all eye-opening experience- I now have so many connections here. Learning about Chicago and its issues was intriguing, and I also had a great internship experience. It was also the people in the program that made is so much more enjoyable- not only students, but also the staff. It was great being with people interested in the same issues I was.
