The Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) and the Universidade de Brasília (UnB) are two of Brazil’s best-regarded universities, receiving recognition from the Ministry of Education and the Guia do Estudante ("Student Guide") ranking them among the top five universities in Brazil. UFJF and UnB have close ties through the “ComCerrado” Program, developing experiments and sampling to evaluate the effect of hydroelectric facilities on regional and global climate change through greenhouse gas measurements.
Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF)
Founded in 1960 by President Juscelino Kubitschek as a federal university that brought together prominent independent colleges including law and medicine, the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) is located two hours north of Rio de Janeiro in the low mountains of the state of Minas Gerais at the city of Juiz de Fora. UFJF has about 11,000 undergraduate students, 4,000 graduate students, and over 1,000 professors and lecturers.
UFJF is divided into departments offering majors (or courses of study). In addition, there are a number of research institutes affiliated with the departments, where undergraduate as well as graduate students work with faculty. Universidade de Brasília (UnB)
Founded in 1962, the Universidade de Brasília (UnB) is located in the heart of Brasília, on the banks of Paranoá Lake. UnB has over 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students, along with close to 1,500 professors.
UnB is comprised of 22 institutes and schools, with 50 academic departments, and over 60 undergraduate programs. A wide variety of research and experimentation facilities exist, including an ecological station, an animal research laboratory, a seismological observatory, and a farm dedicated to ecological and forestry research.
