Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
Upon arrival in Mexico, students will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other organizations and businesses in the area. To learn more about the organizations students may be able to work with, look at the internship power point or the internship directory. Students will work with staff from the Center for International Education (CIEL) at Universidad La Salle to determine their placement for the service learning/internship component of their summer experience.
Listed below is a sampling of some organizations that students at CIEL have worked with in the past. Please note that the organizations each summer may change, and that students will work with the CIEL staff upon arrival to find an organization that is a best fit for them. Christel House
This private institution was created to help orphaned and abandoned children in developing countries to reach their potential, so they can be self-sufficient and grow into socially-committed adults. Those involved with this organization will enroll children and affiliate shelters to the institution, facilitate social and workplace integration, and foster human development through educati0n, health care, and nuturing. Ideal for students interested in Sociology, Human Services, Psychology, and Education.
El Caracol
The private organization works with young men aged 15-23, providing the teaching, tools, and knowledge necessary for a technical degree. Their goal is to help young people at risk in the surrounding neighborhoods where El Caracol has established projects to prevent them from turning to the streets. Those involved with this organization will help to provide the adolescents of the streets with an opportunity to develop and become integrated to society through specialized training. They will also provide staff educators of similar institutions the training and professional knowledge needed to serve this population. Ideal for students interested in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Human Services, Psychology, and Political Science.
Casa Arturo Mundet
This nursing home for the elderly is a private institution that cares for people over 65 years old, whose families may not be able to support them. The institution makes a financial study of the families to decide if the family is sufficiently solvent to pay a monthly fee. Those involved with this organization will learn how to approach and communicate with senior citizens, aid in providing care to older adults, and facilitate social and recreational integration of the residents. Ideal for students interested in Sociology, Human Services, Psychology, and Education.
Casa Cuna La Paz
This Christian-inspired institution was created to help orphaned or abandoned children in Mexico City reach their potential, so they can be self-sufficient and grow into socially-committed adults. They also provide counseling to Mexican families who want to apply to become adoptive parents for abandoned children. Those involved with this organization will learn how to enroll children, facilitate social and workplace integration, and foster human development through education, health care, and nuturing. Ideal for students interested in Education, Sociology, Psychology, Human Services.
CEDI - Centro de Education y Desarrollo Integral
CEDI (Center for Special Education and Integral Development) is a private institution, which helps people who have been rejected by official or private institutions because of conditions such as: Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Autism, Blindness, Deafness, or other handicaps. CEDI dedicates its efforts to the design of specific programs for each individual, helping them to build confidence and self-esteem. Ideal for students interested in Sociology, Human Services, Psychology, and Education.
Casa Alianza
Casa Alianza is a non-profit organization that works to benefit homeless children in social risk. Those involved with this organization will learn how to provide the children and adolescents of the street an opportunity to develop and become integrated with the layers of society through training, and will give help to the young people at risk in the surrounding neighborhoods, where Casa Alianza has established projects in order to prevent their turning to the streets. Ideal for students interested in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Human Services, Psychology, Political Science.
American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico, A.C.
The Chamber of Commerce is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the representation, promotion, and development of business interests between Mexico and the United States. Founded in 1917, American Chamber/Mexico is the largest and oldest American Chamber of Commerce outside of the United States, serving the business community in the promotion of trade and commerce. Members participate monthly in work meetings, with committees organizing approximately 40 public events per year including: forums, seminars, workshops, and classes. In addition to holding these events, AmCham publishes the primary English language business magazine in Mexico ("Business Mexico") and more than 30 other publications, including books, economic studies, business surveys, directories, bulletins, and manuals. The Condesa Clinic
The Condesa Clinic provides services to low-income working class people without access to welfare and social security, who are HIV-positive. The clinic provides complete medical care, ambulatory services, clinical laboratory services, and prevention. The clinic also sets up workshops where people can learn about the disease how to prevent and treat it, if necessary. Ideal for students interested in Public Health, Sociology, and Human Services.
