Urban Education: Student Teaching in Chicago

Chicago, Illinois

Living arrangements

Housing costs are included in the program fee and are based on double occupancy in furnished apartments with cooking facilities; students with special housing needs should contact the ACM office early in the application process.  The costs for apartment rent, gas, electricity, and wireless internet are included in the program fee.

Apartment locations may vary each semester.  Apartments are located in the city of Chicago, close to public transportation and a variety of amenities.  The Chicago Programs office is easily accessible via public transportation from the various student housing locations.

ACM strongly encourages all Chicago Urban Education participants to live together with their student teaching cohort in the arranged ACM housing, as this community of peers is often cited by program alumni as an extremely valuable component of the teaching experience in Chicago.  However, students who have a primary residence in Chicago may request to live at home while participating in their student teaching internship.  ACM must review and approve all requests to live at home, to ensure that the arrangements are feasible for full participation in the program. Whether any portion of the Program Fee will be charged will be determined in accordance with this review process.

If you would like to submit a request to live at home, please contact Program Associate Emily Gaul at egaul@acm.edu or 312-263-5000 for further information.

Janna Nobleza The Chicago Urban Education Program was the best student teaching experience; I was as prepared as I could be for my first year of teaching because of the length of the student teaching program, the support I had throughout the experience from both of my supervisors and my host teacher, and from the camaraderie of living with the other student teachers who were going through the same type of experience I was going through. I have now been teaching for a full seven years in the Chicago Public School system and have had two student teachers from a non-Urban Education school, and have a new appreciation for the program. I would recommend every teacher to go through this program – you will build life-long friendships and great colleagues and contacts. The Urban Education Program opened up a lot of opportunities here in Chicago for me, and was one of the best decisions I made for my career.
