Dr. Javier Espeleta, Director of the Costa Rica programs, is an ecologist and environmentalist who has been a leader in innovative and interdisciplinary projects in research, education, and outreach with a variety of universities and organizations in the US and Costa Rica, including the University of Washington, Biosphere 2, and the Tropical Science Center in San José.

Academic Coordinator Marco Castro Rodriguez has more than 15 years of experience working with international students and young volunteers in Costa Rica and Central America on initiatives in education, youth and women empowerment, the environment and eco-tourism, and rural infrastructure.

The program’s Spanish Language Coordinator, Dr. Mario Morera, has taught Spanish and a variety of courses related to Costa Rican culture and society to US college students for two decades, placing current events and issues in the context of the region’s development through history.

Other faculty who teach elective courses for the program are also accomplished practitioners, as well as educators. An influential researcher, advisor, teacher, and speaker in issues related to education, Andrea Anfossi Gómez has been director of several non-governmental organizations, including Habitat for Humanity-Costa Rica. Dr. Maura Garcia is a practicing doctor and surgeon in the Costa Rica National Health System and has taught at several universities. Award-winning filmmaker Jurgen Ureña Arroyo has produced documentaries, short films, and movies, and his work has been screened at international film festivals.
