Biography

Eliécer Duarte is a Professor-Researcher at the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of  Costa Rica, (OVSICORI-UNA).  Born and raised at the foot of  Costarrican volcanoes he developed a kin interest for volcanoes and National Parks.  Since early in adolescence, he participated as a volunteer in different National Parks, during his school holidays.  Even before graduation in Physical Geography he began working with EDECA (School of Environmental Sciences) at the Caño Negro Wildlife refuge benefiting from a multidisciplinary group applying different approaches for new preserved areas.  Later he undertook duties at OVSICORI to remain affiliated for more than 25 years.

His interest in natural hazards motivated him to complete a masters degree at the Disaster Research Center (University of Delaware) giving the opportunity to explore in many other types of natural and man made hazards.  Other long term studies include: Geology in University of Costa Rica and Geology of ancient volcanoes in the Soviet Union.

Research, academia and international exchanges have taken him to many corners in the world giving talks, conferences and sharing his threefolded passion: volcanoes, natural hazards and environment.  He is the author and co-author of dozens of articles, essays, manuals, and technical reports.  He also advised the Ministry of  Natural Resources in Costa Rica (MINAET)  in sensitive issues.

Currently his main duties are related to volcano monitoring (geochemistry and physical observations). More details can be found at www.ovsicori.una.ac.cr.

Nicole Nemeth, Science Fellow, Wildlife Disease Program, Natl. Wildlife Research Center, USDA/APHIS My experience with the ACM Costa Rica Field Research program was paramount to forming my career interests. The program immersed all of the students, many of us on our first real international experience, into a new and exciting world. It was extremely well-organized and carried out; the staff created an ideal atmosphere for learning and developing, and the Costa Rican families that allowed us into their lives were also extremely supportive. We were allowed time and provided guidance in developing and carrying out our own independent research project, and this for me was a very important achievement. ACM helped me realize that I wanted to attend veterinary school, followed by graduate school; I always look back to ACM as my first step toward a research career.
