Hands-on Field Research Meets Cultural Immersion during Project in Rural Costa Rican Schools

Nov 9, 2011

"In some cases, we found rates [of childhood obesity] that were comparable to the U.S., and the U.S. has declared obesity a national epidemic, so that is concerning," said Jessica Meyer. "I think our [project] is a good baseline for further research."

Meyer, a junior at Colorado College, was describing the results of a project she worked on with Macalester College students Chloe Souza and Margot (Maggie) Swift this past spring semester on the ACM Costa Rica: Field Research in the Environment, Social Sciences, & Humanities program.

For two months, the three women trekked across the Costa Rican countryside visiting schools. At each stop, they explained their project, handed out questionnaires, and then weighed and measured the children. In all, they gathered data from more than 2,600 children, from pre-schoolers up through high school seniors. Read more

Jessica Meyer My abroad experience through the ACM Costa Rica Field Research was phenomenal. The hands-on experience I gained was essential in helping making decisions about my academic focuses at home. I had been unsure if I wanted to pursue Public Health as a major in college. However, after spending a semester doing hands-on research about child obesity, my interests were confirmed. The cultural immersion and language practice from classes, two host families, and two months on my own in the field were also fantastic. Even though I have returned home, I am continuing to work with my advisor in Costa Rica in hopes of compiling my and other students' data into an article ready for publication. I don't know where else you can get an experience like that!

—Jessica Meyer, Costa Rica, Spring 2011
