India programs

Pune & Jaipur, India

ACM offers three distinctive India programs, all based in the city of Pune, which operate at different points throughout the year:

  • The fall ACM India: India: Culture, Traditions, & Globalization program is designed to provide students with insight into the varied aspects of Indian culture and society today.  The program includes "Introduction to India" core course, along with an elective course in one of several areas relating to Indian culture and society.  Students study Marathi language, which is the primary language spoken in Pune.  An important feature of the fall program is the independent study project, which provides all students the opportunity to study a topic of interest to them in-depth during their time in India.   The program begins in mid-August and runs through late November/early December.
  • The winter/spring ACM India: Development Studies & Hindi Language program is designed to provide students with insight into Indian culture and society through a wide-ranging exploration of issues related to development.  There are two program options—a spring semester or a winter quarter/trimester.  The program begins in January, and all students will spend 11 weeks in Pune, taking classes focused on Indian culture, development issues in India, and Hindi language.  Students doing the semester-length program spend an additional month in the city of Jaipur, continuing with intensive Hindi language studies and participating in a development studies practicum with a non-governmental organization (NGO).  This month in Jaipur gives semester students the opportunity to experience a different region of India, looking at issues related to Indian society and development from a new perspective, and gaining practical experience with a local NGO.
  • The summer ACM India: Summer Service Learning & Cultural Immersion program is a six-week summer program where students will engage in community-based service learning with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Pune area.  Students will have access to organizations across a wide variety of disciplines, and prior to arrival at the program site, the ACM office will start working with each student to help find an organization that provides a good match for their particular interests.

Throughout all of the India program options, students live with host families, to experience cultural and linguistic immersion.  In addition, the ACM typically arranges excursions, invites a variety of guest speakers, and offers opportunities for independent travel throughout India.
