Faculty biography - Hemant Apte
Dr. Hemant Apte has been doing research in various states in India since 1993, on issues related to sexual and reproductive health, in urban, rural and tribal settings. He lived in a tribal area for two years to study Change and Continuity in Tribal Life. He has been teaching several courses in various departments in the University of Pune for the past 15 years. Presently he is working on Climate Change and its impact on human lifestyles.
Hemant was born and brought up in Pune, in Western Maharashtra and went to Mumbai to become a Dental Surgeon. He practiced dentistry for 15 years and then joined the University of Pune to his Masters in Anthropology and then did his Ph.D. in Human Sexuality in the School of Health Sciences. He worked as a Senior Social Scientist at the King Edward Memorial Hospital Research Centre for 10 years and then became an Independent Consultant in Social Sciences. He has a son who is settled in Australia. Hemant is married to Keerti, his classmate in Dental School, for the past 32 years.
Hemant’s research considers the Emic perspective – Insider’s View – to be significantly important for understanding human behavior and their response to various interventions of the Government and non-governmental agencies. He conducts courses on Qualitative Research Methods for a number of organizations in India.
