Costs

Students are billed tuition and a program fee by their colleges. Students from non-ACM colleges must contact the ACM office in Chicago.

Tuition

For students from ACM colleges, tuition in fall 2008 will equal approximately one-half of the home college’s 2008-09 annual tuition and is paid directly to the home college.

Tuition refunds are made in accordance with the policy in effect on the home campus in relation to the program calendar.

In most cases, students from ACM colleges remain eligible for their college’s financial aid program. Students should consult their aid officers well in advance.

Program fee

The program fee in fall 2007 was $2,900. This is subject to change for fall 2008. The fee includes round trip airfare on a group flight from Chicago to Dar es Salaam, housing in Dar es Salaam and the Northern Region, partial field trip expenses and most meals.

The program fee does not include housing, meals and transportation during the one-week break. Students are also responsible for buying books (approximately $150).

Other expenses

Students may want to travel during free weekends or the program break. If they do not choose to eat in University cafeterias, they may incur additional food costs, although food is quite inexpensive in Dar es Salaam. They may spend up to one dollar per day on bottled water, and will probably need money for gifts, recreation and local transportation in the city. Most items are inexpensive by American standards.

Students will be expected to obtain appropriate clothing and camping gear, including sturdy shoes, mosquito netting and sleeping bags. They must have inoculations against Measles, Polio, Tetanus, Diptheria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Yellow Fever and Typhoid. All students should obtain a semester’s supply of malaria prophylaxis medication and will be required to obtain special medical evacuation insurance.
