Off-Campus Study – Not Just Another Pretty Place

Off-campus study programs can provide unique access to truly "high impact" and transformative experiences that contribute significantly to students’ intellectual and personal growth. However, to do so, a program must be more than just a menu of activities in an exotic location, writes Carol Dickerman. Ideally, an off-campus program will be thoughtfully and intentionally integrated with high impact learning practices to achieve overall program goals.

Macademia: Connecting colleagues who share research interests


Looking for other faculty to collaborate on a research project or organize a workshop? Macademia, a website developed at Macalester College, enables ACM faculty to quickly find others across the consortium with similar academic and research interests. Read about it

New Mellon grant for faculty seminars

ACM has received a $700,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to establish a series of five ACM-Mellon Liberal Arts Faculty Seminars. The seminars are designed to encourage faculty to develop advanced cross-disciplinary courses for juniors and seniors. Read about it

Opportunities for Faculty

ACM FaCE Project

The ACM Faculty Career Enhancement (FaCE) Project enters its final year with a wide range of activities planned and with grants available for collaborative research and events.

  • Proposals for FaCE grants to be awarded in the final funding cycle are due April 1.
  • Special Call for Proposals: FaCE Presentation Grants – Deadlines are February 1 and April 1.
  • Six faculty projects were funded in the fall 2010 cycle of FaCE grants.
  • The FaCE calendar of events lists upcoming deadlines and workshops.

Support for ACM colleagues to meet

Funds up to $750 are available to help ACM faculty, or administrative leaders, caucus at a professional conference, on a campus, or at the ACM office in Chicago.  For more information or to apply, contact Betsy Hutula at ACM.

On the Off-Campus Study Programs

  • The new Award for Outstanding Research will honor students for high-level independent research they conduct on ACM programs in Costa Rica, Botswana, India, Tanzania, and Chicago. Read about it
  • With the Urban Education Program reopening in Fall 2011, faculty advisors met to discuss the program's curriculum and ways to support students' interests in education through ACM programming. Read about it

    Deadlines for students to apply to study off-campus during the 2011-12 academic year are approaching on many ACM campuses. Please encourage students interested in ACM programs to contact the college's Off-Campus Study Office or ACM as soon as possible!
  • "We make Spanish real" says Mario Morera, who has brought a wealth of experience – and seemingly boundless energy – to his first year as Spanish Language Coordinator of ACM's Costa Rica programs. Read about it
