Faculty from three ACM colleges will travel to Chicago on April 17-20 to learn more about the Chicago Program: Arts, Entrepreneurship, & Urban Studies. The trip is sponsored by the ACM Faculty Site Visits Program, a professional development activity that offers faculty a chance to learn about and become involved in ACM off-campus study programs.
Corina McKendry (Colorado College), Ted Thornhill (St. Olaf College), and Carol Wickersham (Beloit College) will sample all that the Chicago Program has to offer, as they observe seminars and the program’s Core Course, talk with students and staff, and check out the students’ internships and independent study projects. Each of the visitors will also contribute to the program’s curriculum by presenting a lecture or workshop.
The Faculty Site Visits Program was inaugurated this past fall with a trip to Florence, Italy, by six ACM college faculty. The twice-yearly series will continue in fall 2012 with a site visit to the ACM programs in Costa Rica. The program is designed to help faculty advise students who might be interested in participating in off-campus study, to familiarize faculty with program resources and curricular offerings, and to expand the faculty members’ professional networks.
Faculty at ACM colleges who are tenured, tenure-track, or in other continuing appointments may apply for the program, and preference will be given to applicants not already familiar with the program being visited. ACM covers expenses for transportation, lodging, and meals.

Corina McKendry
Corina McKendry, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Colorado College
A Macalester graduate with a Ph.D. from the University of California-Santa Cruz, McKendry arrived at Colorado College in fall 2011 to teach in the political science and environmental policy programs. Her research interests focus on urban greening as part of a broader urban economic development agenda and the social equity implications of urban environmentalism. Chicago was one of the case studies in McKendry’s dissertation research.
Ted Thornhill
Ted Thornhill, Assistant Professor of Sociology, St. Olaf College
Also new to the ACM, Thornhill joined the St. Olaf faculty this past fall, where he has taught courses this year in Race and Class in American Culture; Introduction to Sociology, and Crime, Law, & Society. Thornhill received a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and his research and teaching interests include race and ethnicity; racism and antiracism; crime and social control; quantitative and qualitative methods; social inequality; religion; classical sociological theory; and race, class, and gender.
Carol Wickersham
Carol Wickersham, Director of Community-Based Learning, Beloit College
As the Director of one of seven offices that constitute Beloit’s new Liberal Arts in Practice Center (LAPC), Wickersham is directly involved in the college’s commitment to learning beyond the classroom, and her research and writing interests include the pedagogy of community-based learning. An ordained minister, she received an M.Div. from the Pacific School of Religion and teaches the Duffy Community Partnerships Seminar, Practical Approaches to Social Problems, and the Leadership Seminar in Beloit’s sociology department.
