Presenter: Christopher Lee, Associate Vice-Chancellor for Human Resource Services, Virginia Community College System

This session will provide a general overview of best practices in running a faculty search, including legal issues that apply and the importance of having a diverse search committee.

3:15 pm - The Diversity Advantage, Part 2

Presenter: Christopher Lee

This session will cover several progressive tools, research-based methods, and techniques to help participants build considerations of diversity into multiple steps of the faculty search process. This session will cover policies, procedures, and practices relating to redesigning recruitment techniques, and an examination and overview of best practices for faculty search methods and selection techniques through case studies. Content will include case studies so that participants can incorporate and share better interview questions that ensure a rigorous, thorough, and fair search. Best practices for selecting candidates with retention and cultural fit in mind that also give multi-cultural and underrepresented professionals an equal opportunity for success.

Participants will attend one session in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

  • Workshop 1: Unconscious and Implicit Bias

Facilitators: Members of the CIC Professorial Advancement Initiative (PAI) Training Team

Eve Fine, Researcher and the Director of Curriculum and Implementation for WISELI (Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute), University of Wisconsin-Madison
Maurice Stevens, Senior Faculty Research Director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, The Ohio State University

This interactive workshop uses video case studies to foster discussion between participants and awareness regarding the ways in which we can work to fine-tune our ability to recognize and respond to the influences of subtle biases. The goal of this session is to enhance our ability to identify instances of unconscious and implicit biases, and learn new methods of addressing them when they come up during hiring committee discussions and search processes.

  • Workshop 2: Creating Inclusive Environments

Facilitators: Consultants for InciteChange!

Noor Ali, Assistant Director for Social Justice Education at Northwestern University and Adjunct Faculty at Harper College in Student Development
robbie routenberg, Lead consultant at InciteChange! and faculty at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

This interactive workshop will focus on increasing participants' understanding of the complex barriers that can affect how underrepresented individuals (i.e. faculty, staff, and students) experience campus life, departmental colleague dynamics, and administrative expectations. The goal of this session is to gain a greater understanding of the effects of implicit bias in maintaining policies and structures that have the potential to perpetuate an exclusionary campus culture and experiences of marginalization. This session will also offer an opportunity to explore concrete strategies for creating a culture of inclusivity in classroom, research, and broader campus settings so as to enhance the experience and retention of diverse community members.

4:00 pm - Next Steps and Large Group Debrief

Facilitators: Noor Ali and robbie routenberg, InciteChange!

The co-facilitators from InciteChange! will lead participants through a series of individual worksheets to spark reflection and accountability related to creating inclusive climates and synthesize what they have learned into tangible next steps to take back with them.
