SAIL 2017: Call for Pre-Proposals

How to apply

SAIL funds seminar-based learning communities that enable 15 faculty members from five ACM colleges to explore topics they identify as interesting and important through a multi-disciplinary lens.

SAIL consists of two closely-related components; one embedded in the other. The central component is a ten-day, on-site thematic workshop located at a site selected to facilitate immersion and multi-perspective engagement with the theme. This is embedded in an 18-month framework in which participants prepare for and follow up on the site-based visit. The goal is to develop innovative, integrative, advanced-level coursework at their colleges.

This Call for Pre-Proposals seeks to encourage compelling topics and distinctive on-site experiences for SAIL 2017. In framing your ideas, you should:

  • Identify and propose a theme of both individual and broad interest that: (1) is conducive to inter-disciplinary exploration; and (2) will stimulate the development of advanced-level coursework during and after the completion of the two-year seminar.
  • Select and propose a domestic location for the ten-day, on-site portion of the seminar that will promote a unique understanding of that theme.
  • Compose a leadership team of three faculty members from your campus, including representation from the natural sciences and math, the social sciences, and the arts and humanities. The interdisciplinary composition of the leadership team will foster the exploration of inter-disciplinary perspectives that are at the heart of the SAIL initiative.
