Learning Objectives & Outcomes

All ACM colleges are grounded in the liberal arts tradition, and this educational commitment extends to ACM off-campus study programs. By participating in one of these programs, you’ll benefit from studying in a new location that combines experiential, place-based learning with academic purpose similar to your home campus as you pursue the program's learning goals.

In each program you’ll enjoy small class sizes, allowing you to work closely with faculty and other students. You’ll also live in housing and participate in activities that provide everyday opportunities to connect course-based learning with the local community and culture.

You’ll find that the learning objectives and outcomes of each ACM program reflect these liberal arts educational values.

The Jordan: Middle East & Arabic Language Studies program is designed to provide you with an immersive cultural and academic experience in Jordan and the opportunity to explore a wide variety of topics related to the Middle East.

Program learning objectives:

  • Significantly advance your knowledge and use of Arabic language through training matched with your initial language level on arrival.
  • Deepen your knowledge and understanding of the Middle East and Islamic world through coursework and independent study that make regular and engaging use of the program location in Jordan.
  • Gain the skills needed to establish and conduct daily life in the Middle East, create new relationships with people in the region, and reflect on the relationship between the personal experience of daily life and scholarly ideas about the Middle East.

When you complete the program, you should be able to demonstrate significant progress in understanding and expressing yourself in colloquial Jordanian Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic; discuss some of the historic milestones in the Middle East in general and Jordan in particular with scholarly reflection and firsthand familiarity; and describe the social, cultural, and political challenges that face modern Jordan.
