Dr. Shiwei Chen is Professor of History and Director of the Asian Studies Program at Lake Forest College. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Yunnan University, master’s degree from Peking University, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Before joining the faculty of Lake Forest College in 1998, Professor Chen taught at various higher educational institutions, including Peking University and Cornell University. The courses he taught cover a wide scope of subjects and levels in Chinese history and Japanese history.

Professor Chen’s primary field of research and expertise is in modern Chinese history with a special emphasis on Republican China’s state building and the development of its scientific community. A recipient of numerous prestigious scholarships, he has worked as a research fellow at a variety of leading research institutions, such as Harvard Yenching Institute at Harvard University, Joseph Needham Research Institute at Cambridge University, and Asia Research Center at the National University of Singapore.

In the field of public service, Professor Chen has been active inside and outside Lake Forest College, playing a central role in administration. He has served as the college’s Chair of the History Department, Director of the Beijing Program, and Faculty Advisor for the ACM Shanghai Program and the Japan Study program.

In fall 2018, Professor Chen will again serve as the Visiting Faculty Director for ACM Shanghai Program at East China Normal University. He plans to teach one course in Modern Chinese History, which will be listed in the Global China Program and open to other international students. Meanwhile, he will also oversee the independent study projects each ACM student undertakes as part of the academic program and teach a research methodology course in connection with these projects.
