Deepen your knowledge of contemporary issues and society in Brazil and Latin America by taking elective courses, taught in English, with students from Brazil and countries around the world as your classmates. PUC-Rio’s area studies courses in Brazilian culture cover topics in disciplines such as anthropology and sociology, art and design, history, business and marketing, and international relations.

To help you share daily life with Brazilians, you’ll study Portuguese language at a level suited to your proficiency, from beginning to advanced. The instructors will help you develop your ability to understand, speak, read, and write Portuguese in both formal and informal situations.

Is there an aspect of Brazilian society or culture that you want to explore in greater depth? The optional independent study project connects your learning with your particular passions and academic interests. You can choose a topic in fields across the arts, social sciences, and humanities.

The ACM visiting faculty director will guide you in planning and completing a project that is linked to your surroundings in Rio and Brazil and includes research in the community, such as interviews and observation.

Students with background in Portuguese language may be able to enroll in elective courses taught in Portuguese. The PUC-Rio International Cooperation Office advises ACM students on their academic options.
