The Maasai women spend a significant amount of time in beadwork. Bead ornaments are important in Maasai culture because they represent their status in the social hierarchy through body ornaments. Recently, bead ornaments have become popular souvenirs. As a result, Maasai women have created cooperatives to sell their beadwork to earn a little income. In a patriarchal society, this new source of income gives the Maasai women a little more freedom.
