What Erin Burk wrote about her photo:

One weekend, my host family took me on a tour of the mountainside surrounding the city of San José. We passed through many smaller rural towns. This photo was taken in Rancho Redondo, a milk cow community named after a round, red ranch located in the town's center. A farmer's market-type celebration was happening that day, as it does every Sunday, where the town comes together to eat, listen to music, and celebrate their cultural heritage.

Q: How do you think the weekend tour outside San José enhanced your program experience and your understanding of Costa Rica?

While taking classes in San José, we spent a lot of time getting to know the city and its culture. Though we (the students) were able to and often did travel over the weekends, we really only went to the most highly trafficked tourist areas out of convenience. Being able to take a tour of the countryside surrounding San José with my host family gave me a taste of life outside the city and outside the tourist communities. I was able to see that the country, like the city, has its own unique culture and customs that differ from anything I've experienced here in the States.

Q: Since you’ve returned from the program, have you been glad that you took photos while you were there?

When I think back on my experience in Costa Rica, it is hard to describe the feeling I get. I have so many memories from so many distinct experiences that it's almost impossible to construct a cohesive summary of my experience abroad. For this reason, I am so glad I took photos while I was there. Though I may never be able to fully recount my story, looking back through the pictures I have really helps bring back certain moments in time that I never could have remembered otherwise.
