Student Spotlight – Anthony Adams

Anthony Adams

Monmouth College, communication studies and political science

GSEF Fellow, Cohort 1
Research Placement: University of Nebraska-Lincoln

"Always put your wellbeing first. Whatever you are working on will almost always be there later."

How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

I, according to the people who advise and inspire me, am a "scholar," a "hard worker," and an "adult." I was consulted about absolutely none of this. I also rant at people for 10 minutes at a time in a suit for trophies, sometimes.

What kind of research are you working on this summer? Who are you working with?

Over the summer, I worked with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Communication Studies' Dr. Angela Palmer-Wackerly. We were looking for communication barriers between local community health aides and their patients. Basically, we were trying to determine where communication about health care options breaks down between informal health workers and those they try to help.

What have you learned so far?

I have learned so much about how to take care of myself in the world of academia. From my research, being at school, and even GSEF itself, I have begun to figure out that self care is still important in a field like academia, where things tend to move really quickly if you aren't careful and deliberate. Always put your wellbeing first. Whatever you are working on will almost always be there later.
