St. Olaf College, vocal performance

GSEF Fellow, Cohort 1

“I’m an avid reader and enjoy books about everything from Westeros to 20th-century Russia.”

How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

I’m a Vocal Performance major from St. Olaf College who loves singing and studying music history. I’m also an avid reader and enjoy books about everything from Westeros to 20th-century Russia.

What kind of research are you working on this summer? Who are you working with?

I am working at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with Professor Yvonne Redman. Currently, I am looking at the musical Rent and Contemporary Commercial Music and their connections with discourse in musical theater about social justice for marginalized persons.

What part(s) of this experience will benefit you most? How so?

I think that a huge part of it is learning how to set your own schedule and holding yourself accountable. It was intended to mimic the grad school life, and I think that getting a taste of what it is like has been helpful in deciding what kinds of schools and programs I want to look into for grad school.

What do you want your faculty mentor and/or university to remember about you?

My dazzling wit and charming demeanor. Just kidding, probably that I was a hard worker and someone who genuinely loved research.
