Zanzibar

Zanzibar

The Zanzibar archipelago, consisting of Zanibar, Pemba and other smaller islands, is in the Indian Ocean off the coast of mainland Tanzania.

A fishing dhowHistorically, Zanzibar was important in trade routes connecting East Africa with Arabia and the Persian Gulf. The island became the world's largest producer of cloves, traded in ivory from the mainland, and was a notorious link in the slave trade.

Politically, Zanzibar has over time been a city-state, under the rule of the Portuguese and the Sultans of Oman, and a British protectorate. A monarchy lasted in Zanzibar into the mid-20th century, when the last sultan fled to asylum in England. Shortly after that, in 1964, Zanzibar and Tanganyika joined to become the nation of Tanzania.

Surrounded by coral reefs, Zanibar is known for its excellent scuba diving and its beautiful beaches.

Historic Stone Town is situated on a peninsula on the western side of the island of Zanzibar. The narrow streets, coral stone buildings and carved wooden doors of the old town are reminders of the long, eclectic history of Zanzibar.
