Independent Study Project

Dig deeper into an issue that came up in one of your classes or explore a topic related to your major by designing and implementing your own independent study project (ISP).

In some cases, students base their projects on their volunteer experiences with non-governmental organizations. For example, students have tackled subjects ranging from environmental issues to gender roles in the Middle East to tourism.

You’ll work independently to conduct in-depth interviews and field observations while being mentored by the ACM visiting faculty member. You’ll also have access to local experts and scholars who work within your topic focus area.

Your research will be supplemented by a weekly ISP course, which is a directed workshop covering a combination of reading, discussion, writing, and your evaluation of other students’ work. At the end of the program, you will prepare a written report and showcase your research to your peers and instructors.
